POWER

POWER (People Organizing to Win Equal Rights) is a prime example of cooperation within our community.  Led by well-known activists Cheryl Linear and Jennifer Hadlock, the group's mission is to organize and develop anti-racism leadership that will help progressive activists recognize the impact that white-dominant cultural norms and standards have on their organizing.  POWER seeks to unite people of color and their white allies in a true multicultural, multiethnic movement that will be able to effectively work for social and political change.

Racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ageism, ableism...these oppressions are linked.  By participating in POWER's facilitated "fishbowl"-style exercises and its discussions on principles and strategies, people (no matter what their sexual orientation or gender identity) can learn more about standing together in the fight for living wages, prison reform, nondiscriminatory immigration policies, fair housing conditions, GLBTI civil rights, and other forms of social justice.

Meetings are held at Project 100 on the fourth Monday of every month.  Dinner is provided at 6:00 p.m., with meetings beginning at 6:30 and usually lasting two hours.  POWER is grateful for the assistance of True Colors, Inc., which acts as its fiduciary agent, and for the financial support of the Haymarket People's Fund.

To learn more, call Cheryl at 860-953-8475 or Jennifer at 523-0250.  E-mail may also be sent to fighting_for_equality@yahoo.com.
