A Little History...
Out In The Park At Six Flags New England
has become the Premier Gay Day in New England with over 7,000 people attending the 2005 event!
Out In The Park began with over 1000 GLBT attendees the first year in 1997!
In 2003, our 7th year, we counted between 2,500-3,000. In 2004 between 5,000 to 7,000.
In 2005 and 2006 over 7,000! For 2007 our 11th anniversary, we expect over 10,000!
Just by coincidence, in 2002, some of us wound up attending "Gay Day At The Great Escape".
We couldn't help but notice a plethora of folks wearing YELLOW T-shirts
(which were printed with "Gay Day At The Great Escape").
When we inquired, we were told that only folks that had purchased the "Gay Day Package"
(which included lunch) got a T-shirt. OK, we felt a little left out not knowing
we should have worn yellow, but we had Six Flags Season Passes, so we got over it.
After talking to several folks (wearing yellow shirts, of course), we found out that
for 2002 (8/24) and 2003 (8/2), the Capital District Gay & Lesbian Community Council
had planned a "Gay Day at The Great Escape" for a special park admission price which included a catered picnic lunch.
But when we contacted the CDGLCC in 2004 to see if they had plans for such an event
(we just wanted to help them promote it), alas, we were told that there were no plans for a
"Gay Day At The Great Escape" in Lake George NY.
With all the hubbub and press that Out In The Park 2004 was getting,
how could we not pick up and promote, one more date?
We knew lots of folks from Vermont and Massachusetts
would go, along with everyone from New York state.
We figured we might also see lots of Canadians!
Bon jour, Everyone!
So, in 2004, we continued the tradition of another great, fun, all-ages, social event
for the GLBTQIS community in the Albany, Lake George New York and Vermont area!
When we contacted The Great Escape during the summer of 2004, and told them who we were,
and that we have been planning the "Gay Day" at Six Flags New England for the past 8 years...
well, they already knew who we were. (Apparently good news spreads fast)
The folks at The Great Escape were very happy to work with us and printed 10,000
special discount coupons for the 2004 event!
We helped make sure that the special Out Around The Lake discount coupons were distributed
to various GLBT-friendly clubs and businesses in and around the Albany and upstate
New York areas, along with Vermont, Western MA and Connecticut.
Turnout was good, but not quite what we had hoped for.
Alas, when we selected the 2004 date, it was the 50th anniversary of The Great Escape
and their calendar was full of other special events
(we simply picked the least busy day after Out In the Park At Six Flags New England).
We were unaware that the Capital Region AIDS Walk was held in Albany on the same day.
For 2005, we moved the date for Out Around The Lake to the SATURDAY AFTER Out In The Park
At Six Flags New England. We plan to hold this event on thje 4th Saturday of September.
(Most year's, this will also mean that Out Around The Lake At
The Great Escape will be held the day BEFORE
the Albany AIDS Walk.)
We are planning on this Gay Day event becoming "fixed"
on the 4th Saturday of September. (Which will usually be the SATURDAY AFTER Out In The Park
At Six Flags New England.)
Oh yes. Why do we call it "Out Around The Lake"? Well, there is a "lake" in the
middle of the park. OK, it's really a small pond, with swan boat rides.
But the event is held in and "around" the Lake George area.
(OK, technically, the park is located in Glens Falls, NY, just south of Lake George)
